ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026, and certified organisations have until 30 September 2029 to move across. A practical iso 9001 2026 transition checklist covers four areas. First, the climate change wording added to Clauses 4.1 and 4.2 in 2024. Second, stronger leadership, quality culture and ethics. Third, clearer risk and opportunity planning. Fourth, control of the digital tools you rely on.

ISO 9001:2026 is the first full revision of the world’s most widely used quality standard since 2015. It matters to many UK businesses, from security firms holding SIA ACS accreditation to care providers working to CQC “Well-Led” standards. The update is not just paperwork. It puts more weight on leadership, quality culture and ethical behaviour. The core “Harmonised Structure” (formerly Annex SL) stays the same.

This guide gives you a gap analysis and a step-by-step roadmap for a smooth, cost-effective transition. If you hold a 2015 certificate, you do not need to start again. You do need to show planned updates to your context, risk records and leadership arrangements before the transition deadline.

The 3-year transition timeline: When does ISO 9001:2015 expire?

ISO published ISO 9001:2026 on 16 September 2026. ISO’s quality committee (ISO/TC 176) has said that organisations certified to ISO 9001:2015 have until 30 September 2029 to complete their transition. After that date, 2015 certificates are no longer valid.

Certification bodies such as BSI, NSI and LRQA first need their own accreditation for the new edition, so early 2026 audits may be limited. Ask your certification body when it will start 2026 transition audits, and when it will stop issuing new 2015 certificates.

The “Golden Rule” of Transition: Do not wait for your 3-year recertification audit. Most UK businesses find it cheapest to transition during a scheduled Surveillance Audit. Many certification bodies charge extra for a standalone “Transition Assessment” outside the normal audit cycle.

Phase Timeline Key Action for UK Quality Managers
Preparation Months 1–6 Conduct a gap analysis against the 2026 requirements; update the Context of the Organisation.
Implementation Months 6–18 Update Risk Registers, Quality Policy, and Internal Audit schedules to reflect the changed clauses.
Internal Audit Months 18–24 Perform a full system audit against ISO 9001:2026 to verify compliance.
Certification Body Transition Months 24–36 (by 30 September 2029) Formal transition audit by your UKAS-accredited Certification Body (e.g., BSI, NSI, SSAIB).

Clause 4.1 & 4.2: Documenting Climate Change & Sustainability

The climate change requirement is not new in 2026. It arrived in February 2024 as an amendment to ISO 9001:2015, and it already applies to every current certificate. ISO 9001:2026 carries it forward. Clause 4.1 asks you to decide whether climate change is a relevant issue. Clause 4.2 notes that interested parties can have climate-related requirements. Your certification body auditor will check both at your next audit, whatever edition you hold.

How to comply without an ISO 14001 manual

You do not need a full Environmental Management System (EMS) for this. Instead, your iso 9001 2026 transition checklist should show how climate-related factors affect your ability to meet customer requirements. For example:

  • Supply Chain Disruption: Does extreme weather affect your lead times or material availability?
  • Regulatory Compliance: Do you need a Carbon Reduction Plan to win major public sector contracts? PPN 006 now sets this out (it replaced PPN 06/21 in February 2025).
  • Customer Expectations: Do your clients require “Green” service delivery options?

Evidence Tip: Add “Climate Change” to your PESTLE analysis (Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, Environmental). Then make sure the result appears in your Risk Register.

Clause 5.1: Evidencing Quality Culture & Ethical Behaviour

Under the 2015 edition, a signed Quality Policy and Management Review records often satisfied Clause 5.1 (Leadership and Commitment). ISO 9001:2026 puts more weight on leadership, quality culture and ethical behaviour. Expect auditors to look for a Quality Culture. That means staff feel able to report errors, and quality is everyone’s job, not just the “Quality Manager’s”.

The “Ethics” Requirement

The 2026 edition links quality more closely to ethical behaviour. In the UK, this fits well with Social Value Act and Modern Slavery Act reporting. To prepare for a 2026 audit, be ready to show:

  1. Transparency: How do you communicate mistakes to customers? (Linked to Clause 8.2).
  2. Psychological Safety: Do you have a “no-blame” culture for reporting non-conformities?
  3. Integrity: Are your sales and marketing claims factually verifiable and ethical?

For security and care businesses, this often overlaps with internal audit requirements for “Well-Led” governance. If you already have a Whistleblowing Policy and an Ethics Code of Conduct, reference both in your QMS documentation.

Clause 6 & 8: Risks, Opportunities, and Digital Tools

ISO 9001:2015 introduced “Risk-Based Thinking.” The 2026 edition gives clearer guidance on risks and opportunities. In practice, keep Risks (things that could go wrong) and Opportunities (strategic advantages) clearly apart in your planning.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Automated Tools

The standard does not add a separate AI clause. But if you use AI for bid writing, scheduling, data analysis or customer chatbots, existing clauses still apply. These include Clause 7.1.6 (Organisational Knowledge) and Clause 8.1 (Operational Planning). An auditor may ask:

  • How do you ensure the accuracy of AI-generated outputs?
  • What is the human-in-the-loop process for critical quality decisions?
  • How do you protect customer data when using third-party digital tools?

Include these “Digital Assets” in your transition review. If AI helps deliver your service, treat it as a “resource”. Like any piece of equipment, it needs checking, monitoring and competent users.

How to time your transition with BSI, NSI, or SSAIB

Choosing when to transition is a financial decision as well as a compliance one. Most UK certification bodies offer three routes:

  1. The Surveillance Transition (Recommended): You add a little extra time (usually 0.5 to 1 day) to your annual surveillance audit. This is the cheapest way to upgrade.
  2. The Recertification Transition: You wait until your 3-year certificate is due for renewal. This works, but leaves little room if you get “Major Non-Conformities” against the changed clauses.
  3. The Standalone Transition: You book an audit just to move to 2026. This costs the most, but may be needed if a major tender asks for the 2026 edition now.

Before booking, carry out a full gap analysis. If you are unsure where you stand, a professional internal audit can find gaps before the “real” auditor arrives. That can save the cost of a failed transition.

Frequently asked questions

How long do UK businesses have to transition from ISO 9001:2015 to ISO 9001:2026?

ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026. Organisations certified to ISO 9001:2015 have until 30 September 2029 to complete the transition. Aim to finish well before then, ideally by mid-2028, to avoid the last-minute rush for auditor time.

Does ISO 9001:2026 require a completely new Quality Manual?

No. If your current manual follows the Harmonised Structure (Clauses 4–10), you only need to update specific sections. Many UK businesses are moving from bulky manuals to “Process Maps” and “Digital Management Systems”, which are easier to update for 2026.

What evidence do auditors want for “Quality Culture” in Clause 5.1?

Expect auditors to look for “soft” evidence. Examples include staff interview answers, “near-miss” reports, quality training records, and how leaders respond when things go wrong. They want to see a “supportive” quality system, not a “punitive” one.

Can we transition to ISO 9001:2026 during our normal annual surveillance audit?

Yes, and this is usually the most cost-effective method. Tell your certification body (e.g., BSI or NSI) at least 3 months ahead. That lets them add the extra “transition time” to your auditor’s schedule.

How does ISO 9001:2026 overlap with SIA ACS and CQC governance?

The focus on “Ethics” and “Quality Culture” fits well with the SIA ACS “Self-Assessment” and the CQC “Well-Led” framework. Work you do for ISO 9001:2026 can provide much of the evidence these sector audits ask for.
