SafeContractor questions: requirements, cost and SSIP
What is SafeContractor?
SafeContractor is Alcumus’s contractor accreditation scheme and a member of SSIP (Safety Schemes in Procurement). Clients use it to check that contractors meet health and safety requirements before they work on site.
What are the SafeContractor requirements?
Typically: a health and safety policy signed and dated within the last 12 months, site- or project-specific risk assessments and method statements, COSHH assessments where relevant, insurance schedules, training and competence records, and controls for any subcontractors you use. How much does SafeContractor accreditation cost?
Alcumus publishes contractor plans starting from around £540 a year (Standard), with higher-support plans from about £650 to £690 a year. Always check their current price list. Add your preparation time, or consultancy if you want the evidence built for you. The SafeContractor guide has the full breakdown.
Can I transfer my SSIP accreditation to SafeContractor?
Through SSIP’s Deem to Satisfy arrangement, a current certificate from another SSIP scheme can reduce the core health and safety questions you need to answer. Client-specific or additional modules may still apply, so check what your client asks for.
How long does SafeContractor take, and how long does it last?
Turnaround depends on your plan and on how complete your evidence is when you submit it. Most delays come from auditor queries on generic RAMS or unsigned policies. Once the auditor is satisfied, certification is issued for 12 months.
